Fundamentals of Basic Pistol Course in College Station, TX
Some time ago I was looking for a basic pistol course in College Station, TX for my wife. Let’s be honest here, she would never take instruction from me so I needed to find someone that I could trust. Growing up in a family that didn’t really shoot much she has almost no experience. I was looking for the kind of class that would get her comfortable around handguns and how they work. A class that would teach her safe practices for owning, using, maintaining, storing, cleaning, and even how to choose what is right for you. In my search I didn’t find anything locally that fit what I was looking for.
So what do people do in that vacuum? Some people likely went out and bought a handgun and just stored it away in the safe. No real knowledge at all of how to use it or even how to load it. Thinking they can now protect themselves but not realizing that isn’t really going to help them in most situations. Some probably saw something they thought looked cool and it was a good price so they bought it. I mean all guns are pretty much the same right? (This is me shaking my head right now in a left/right motion.)
‘I’ll just have my buddy Carl teach me, he shoots a lot.’ (Even though Carl has no real training and probably will teach you bad habits.) They all went about it in a way that would normally be counter intuitive. At least they took positive steps, but they could have gone about it a better way if there was an option.
That void told me that there were a lot of people who likely wanted to learn about guns. People who didn’t know where to start. In today’s world there have got to be people wanting to learn how to defend themselves with a handgun. Maybe it was just someone who used to recreationally shoot with their uncle or grandpa and wanted to live those fun times again. The common theme here is if they don’t where to start they likely never will or they would take the wrong path.
I spent 11 years in the Marine Corps Infantry and have taught countless Marines fundamentals of marksmanship. I loved it and thrived in that environment. So I got to thinking… ‘Why not create a class that will teach people all of the fundamentals of handguns? Maybe I can be a little Johnny Appleseed of the 2nd Amendment and teach people who want to own a gun the right way to start.’ That was the day that the concept of https://www.12thgun.com was born.
Even though I had taught hundreds of men how to be better Marines and to shoot better, I needed more. While that was great experience tactically, that wouldn’t translate to someone who had never held a gun before. If I wanted to get people more comfortable with shooting and owning a gun, I needed to take some instruction myself but I needed a reputable foundation of coursework that I felt comfortable teaching.
I found the NRA and all of the courses they offer and knew I landed at the right spot. The NRA has been an advocate for Americans and their 2nd Amendment rights from their inception. They have created programs to teach Americans the correct and safe way to own and shoot firearms and I felt great about their methodology. A perfect fit and an organization that I knew had the right end game in mind. After attending several courses myself to become an NRA Certified Pistol Instructor I was able to start spreading those 2nd Amendment “appleseeds”
