What are the benefits of a License to Carry in Texas?

Clients and friends ask me all the time, “What are the benefits of a License to Carry in Texas?” In September of 2021, the State of Texas passed legislation to allow the permitless carry of a handgun. While I applaud the state for doing so, there are still benefits to obtaining a License to carry. There are places that citizens who don’t have a License to Carry Permit are not legally allowed to carry. Some of these same places are perfectly legal for Permit holders to carry. Not to mention there are certain protections License to Carry holders get that non-holders don’t.

In this article we will discuss some of the places and protections LTC holders get over Permitless Carry citizens. In addition to the places you can carry listed below, you have additional protections when accidentally carrying in places like behind a secure area at an airport.

Below are places a Permitless Carry Citizen cannot carry but an LTC holder can:

* Within 1,000 feet of a school (outside of school buildings)

* Room of an open meeting of a governmental entity

* A public place with only a TPC 30.05 “no firearm” sign that is reasonably likely to come to the attention of intruders

* A hospital or nursing facility, or amusement park with no effective TPC 30.06 or 30.07 notice

* Premises, grounds, or buildings (including collegiate sporting events) of an institution of higher education on which a sponsored activity is taking place

* A passenger transportation vehicle of an institution of higher education where effective TPC 30.06 sign is not posted

* 38 other US States that allow reciprocity with a Texas License to Carry

* Any place with the following signs (or similar wording or design)

No Guns Signs

These signs refer to people who do not have a License to Carry and choose Permitless Carry in Texas
